FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is this collection, and how were these taxa chosen?
The taxa included in this collection were selected on three main criteria:
(1) The families and genera imaged here are relatively common and occur through most or all of eastern North America.
2) We include freshwater macroinvertebrate taxa commonly used for estimating an Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) for water quality monitoring. While our collection concentrates on insects, we include other macroinvertebrates such as snails, crustaceans, planarians, and bivalves that are commonly included in citizen science water monitoring training and collection activities.
(3) We restrict our collection to taxa occurring in lotic (flowing water) habitats.
